Maddie – Home for Christmas!

Madeline cured of feline hyperthyroidism

I’ve written this testimonial to thank Andrew and his team at the Hyperthyroid Cat Centre for all the care and attention they have given to both Maddie (my ginger cat) and guidance and support to myself during the radioiodine treatment over the last eight weeks.

Maddie was first diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in June 2013, and by mid-November after a number of months of feeding tablets to her; suffering the consequences of scratching and a distressed cat it was obvious a longer term solution was required.  Not knowing what options were available I discussed this with my local veterinarian who advised of three; surgery, nutritional management or radioiodine treatment.

Whilst the surgery option was the one I expected to take prior to my discussion, nutritional management seemed to have too many issues, I’d read a number of articles and a number of publications about the radioiodine treatment and decided to take that course of action. Why radioiodine, quite simply the slightly higher risk of surgery was one I didn’t think was necessary where there was an alternative solution available that would have the same end result.  Yes some careful management of Maddie would be required when she came home, a little bit of time to herself, but that would be easy to accommodate.

So after saying yes to my local Vet the next day I received a call from Andrew to discuss Maddie and the case, to discuss the treatment process, her blood tests and current state of health and what the post procedure requirements would entail.  It was nothing short of comprehensive and very educational.  By the end of the phone call she was booked in for the 10th December for treatment.

The treatment Maddie received from the team has been nothing less than excellent from the moment she was welcomed into the centre and homed through to the treatment and recovery stage, to the moment I picked her up 13 days later (could have been earlier if she wasn’t so messy!).

Whilst she was in your care I knew that she was safe and happy as the flow of information to me keeping me updated on her status firstly post treatment and then daily to let me know she was eating (she enjoys that), playing (not so much of that), sleeping (she does quite a lot of that) and generally being herself!

Since returning home and over Christmas whilst she has been in isolation you can see her gaining weight, you can hear her running about and playing and returning to be the cat I knew about 12 months ago, before her diagnosis.

So in reflection I am glad I went for this course of treatment – absolutely, would I do it again in the future if needed – yes.  There are costs and risks with any of the treatments proposed, however in this case the money spent was worthwhile and in my view the risk was minimalised and that is all you can ask with regards to procedures like this.

Again, I want to re-iterate my thanks to Andrew and your team at the Hyperthyroid Cat Centre, all the very best for the future.
